Briana and Math

Today I am trying to make a list of curriculum to look over at convention time for Briana. I was working on my list and naming the math choices out loud - Horizons, ABeka, BJU, Saxon, or Singapore. She said right away that she wanted to do Singapore. She doesn't have any idea what any of these math programs are like so I asked her why she wanted to do Singapore and she said, "Cause they sing." Too funny!

What curriculum do you use when teaching them to read? I would like to supplement what Ashlee is doing in school and work hard on reading this summer and wondering what is best out there. I thought about doing ABeka.

Michelle,

I have used ABeka Phonics and Reading for teaching my three boys and I will probably use it for Briana this year. My sister Heidi taught elementary grades for quite a few years and she thinks that a person could teach a child by just using ABeka's Handbook for Reading. As to the best program, I really don't know. I do know that BJU and ABeka teach from two totally different approaches. BJU uses a word family approach - at, bat, cat, fat, etc. ABeka uses the blend ladder approach - ba(t), be, bi, bo, bu, etc. I hope this is of some help to you. Please, feel free to ask more questions if you have them and I will try to answer.
