I captured a fairly good shot of the hairy woodpecker (now determined to be a downy woodpecker) at the feeder. This picture was taken through my family room window.
P.S. After a comment from a friend, I did more research online about the differences between the downy woodpecker and the hairy woodpecker and I believe this is a downy woodpecker and not a hairy woodpecker. Click here to read more about the differences between the two birds.

Dixie,
I'm going to take an uneducated guess that your hairy woodpecker just might be a downy woodpecker. Downys are a little smaller, and have different head-markings, but the two are hard to distinguish at first look, and I may be wrong.
We are doing fine; we've just been BUSY, and I never got a letter out at Christmas.
Dear Dixie,
Thanks for the great newsy Christmas letter. By the way, we now live in Lenexa, KS. Next time you are out to visit family we need to get together. Love all the update news on family.
Thanks for the family pictures, WOW the family is growing.
Can you get us the e-mails for your sisters? Thanks.
Send to jimtremaine@att.net
God bless, we are doing well.

Carol, I looked at both birds and descriptions in my book before I decided I thought it was a hairy woodpecker. After you left a note, I looked again, and I am just not sure. They are basically identical except for their beak, length, and markings on the tail. Anyway, it is one or the other.
I'm glad you are all well. I miss hearing from you. Write when you have time!
Dixie
Carol, I got online and read some more about the differences between these two birds and I think it may be the downy woodpecker.
